LIVING IN DARKNESS

Darkness – having no light; wicked; obscure; to conceal.

When a person is in physical darkness, he cannot see where to go.  If he tries to walk, he will stumble.  If the tries to run, he will fall. Therefore, he is really stuck in darkness.

The only way he can get out of the darkness is when light comes into the room via a light source, such as a flashlight, lamp, or light fixture.

“. . . open their eyes that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of satan to God, so that they may thus receive forgiveness and release from their sins and a place and a portion among those who are consecrated and purified by faith in me.” (Acts 276:18)

“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:19 KJV)

“For every wrongdoer hates (loathes, detests) the Light, and will not come out into the Light but shrinks from it, lest his works (his deeds, his activities, his conduct) be exposed and reproved. But he who practices truth [who does what is right] comes out into the Light; so that his works may be plainly shown to be what they are–wrought with God [divinely prompted, done with God’s help, in dependence upon Him].”

(John 3:20-21)

Many people love darkness (wickedness, deception) and hate light (truth).  They are consumed with fulfilling their own selfish desires and pleasures predicated on their self will, rather than God’s will.

But the Word of God says, “Enter through the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and spacious and broad is the way that leads away to destruction, and many are those who are entering through it.” (Matthew 7:13 – AMP)

Therefore, it is essential that one make a decision to come out of darkness into the light (truth), so that he can stay on the straight and narrow path that leads to righteousness.  In John 8:12, Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world.  He who follows Me, will not be walking in the dark, but will have the Light, which is Life.”

As you follow Jesus (the truth, the way, and the life), you cannot follow darkness (worldly ways and attitudes) because the two are diametrically opposed.  Light and darkness cannot occupy the same space at the same time. Moreover, as you follow Jesus, you automatically follow the path of righteousness, where you experience love, joy, and peace, and the quality of life yields fruit of the Holy Spirit – is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence).” (Galatians 5:22-23 – AMP)

In John 12:35-36, it reads “ . . .  “You will have the light only a little while longer.  Walk while you have the Light [keep on living by it], so that darkness may not overtake and overcome you.  He who walks about in the dark does not know where he goes [he is drifting].  While you have the Light, believe in the Light [have faith in it, hold to it, rely on it], that you may become sons of the Light and be filled with Light. . . .”

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

(Psalm 119:105 – AMP)

God’s Word will lead and guide you into those attitudes and ways that are true and right in His sight.  “ . . . God is Light, and there is no darkness in Him at all.”

(I John 1:5)

In light of this, God cannot lead you into the way of darkness, but only light.  Following God, following His Word, is the only way to live a life that is characterized by truth and that is pleasing to God.

Remember, you are a “. . . chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, God’s own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him.  Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”  (II Peter 2:9)

God has called you out of darkness, but you must make a decision and stay committed to following Him and His Word throughout your life.  Then and only then, will you “Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.”  (Proverbs 4:14)
